Strengthening Productivity of Indigenous Chicken Enterprises for Sustainability (SPICES) Project

Upscalling & Implemetation Details:

The project upscaled the Kalro Improved Indigenous Chicken (KIIC) Technology in Murang’a and Kiambu Counties. The project targeted to reach 5,000 smallholder farmers directly and 25,000 beneficiaries indirectly.

The project upscaled KIIC technology through Common Interest Groups (CIGs) outreach and training methodology. Twenty (20) trained Volunteer Field Support Trainers (VFSTs) were trained to support sensitization and training producers.

The VFST have been rolling training programmes through four modules; a) Cost benefit analysis production systems and housing, b) Feeds and feeding management,  c) Health and disease control, and d) Record keeping, value addition and marketing.  The VFST also ensures adherence to Indigenous chicken vaccination schedule and maintain the established linkages with the service providers, input suppliers and marketers.
