Upscalling & Implemetation Details:

Farm Concern International received KES 6,813,000 in March 2020 to implement a 2-year project titled ‘Sustainable Sorghum Production and Marketing for Increased economic empowerment for smallholder farmers in Tharaka Nithi County’. The project aimed to contribute towards the reduction of household poverty and improving the well-being of at least 1,800 smallholder farmers in Tharaka Nithi County. The project targeted mobilizing farmers, stakeholders, and other key actors along the sorghum value chain to create awareness of the new sorghum variety namely Kamani, and establish partnerships geared towards creating efficiency along the value chain.

In the project, FCI is disseminating the sorghum technology through Commercial Village Model (CVM). It is an innovative approach to commercialization, trading, and business partnership that promotes collective action in response to market opportunities as well as identifying gaps and consumer demand.
