Fish Value Chain Project

Upscalling & Implemetation Details:

Mwazaro B.M.U. SHG received KES 6,813,000 in May 2020 to implement a 3-year mariculture project titled; “Commercialize mariculture of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and rabbitfish (Siganus argenteus) in Kibokoni, Mwazaro, and Kijiweni for better livelihoods of fisher communities in Kilifi and Kwale Counties”

The project is being implemented in collaboration with Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) and Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). The project targets 360 members.

The goal of the project is to commercialize cage and pond culture of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and rabbitfish (Siganus argenteus) in Mwazaro, Kijiweni, and Kibokoni for better livelihoods of fisher communities in Kilifi and Kwale Counties. The project also aims at testing the design and optimization of mariculture cages in the ocean.
