Camel Value Chain Project

Camel Value Chain Project

Upscalling & Implemetation Details:

ADS-NRR received KES 6,813,000 in April 2022 to implement a project titled; “Building Resilience and Enhanced Climate Change Adaptation among Agro-Pastoralists in West Pokot through Camel Milk production”. The project is improving camel productivity through the up-scaling adoption of climate-smart technologies in the camel value chain in West Pokot County. The project’s plan is to upgrade the local breeds with superior Somali breeds.

Simultaneously, the action aims at building the capacity of 2,000 camel producer households on good camel management practices  (calf rearing, diseases control, parasites/pests control, feeds and feeding, use of Chumvi Kuria, use of raised water troughs and housing/shelter for camels, milk handling). The action will enable the farmers to effectively participate in the camel milk value chain. A total of 30 (24 bulls and 6 female) of Somali camel breeds will be procured from Isiolo and distributed to identified beneficiary households to improve their local Turkana breed. This action is expected to benefit camel producer groups who are using the Isiolo male breeds to serve their local Turkana breed. The project ends in April 2024.
