Kalro Improved Indigenous Chicken Value Chain Project

Upscalling & Implemetation Details:

Support for Tropical Initiatives in Poverty Alleviation (STIPA) received KES 6,813,000 in February 2022 to implement a KIIC value chain project titled; “Upscaling KALRO Improved Indigenous Chicken in Kisumu and Siaya Counties”. The overall objective of this project is to increase the adoption and production of Karlo Improved Indigenous Chicken (KIIC) among 3,500 smallholder farmers within 24 months in order to improve food security, employment, and incomes, in western Kenya, specifically, Kisumu and Siaya counties.

The project is working with selected brooder farmers who rear one-day-old chicks to 2-4 weeks before they are distributed to the farmers. The brooding farms also play the role of field schools where farmers are trained in poultry management skills before they stock chicks. STIPA has also established Uzima Farm where they train urban farmers in Kisumu. The project ends in February 2024.
